How To Install Backup Sights on Your Rifle
Adding a set of backup sights, like the Magpul MBUS® 3, to your semi-automatic rifle is a great way to enhance your shooting experience. Backup sights are a reliable and cost-effective option for both new and seasoned shooters using a primary rifle optic. In this guide, we'll walk you through installing backup sights on your semi-automatic rifle step-by-step.
Materials Needed:
Before you start, make sure you have the following materials on hand:
1. Backup sights kit (front and rear sights)
2. Screwdriver set
3. Gunsmithing tools
4. Loctite or similar thread locker
5. Level
6. Bench vise (optional but recommended for stability)
Step 1: Safety First
Ensure your rifle is unloaded, and the chamber is clear. Always prioritize safety by keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and following all firearm safety rules.
Step 2: Gather Your Tools
Having the right tools is crucial for a smooth installation process. A screwdriver set, gunsmithing tools, and a level will help you achieve a precise and secure fit for your backup sights.
Step 3: Identify the Type of Sights
Different rifles may have different mounting systems for backup sights. Identify whether your rifle requires a dovetail mount, Picatinny rail mount, or any other specific attachment method. Consult your rifle's manual or the iron sights kit instructions for this information.
Step 4: Remove Existing Sights (If Applicable)
If your rifle already has sights attached, you may need to remove them. Use the appropriate tools to loosen and remove any screws or bolts securing the existing sights.
Step 5: Install the Front Sight
Place the front sight on the designated mounting area, aligning it to your rifle's specifications. Use the provided screws to secure the front sight in place. Ensure it is level and snug, but avoid overtightening to prevent damage.
Step 6: Install the Rear Sight
Attach the rear sight to its designated position, aligning it with the front sight. Use the screws provided and a level to ensure the rear sight is properly aligned. Again, use caution not to overtighten the screws.
Step 7: Check and Adjust
Once both sights are installed, perform a visual check to ensure they are aligned. Use the level to confirm that the sights are straight and level with the rifle. Make any necessary adjustments to achieve proper alignment.
Step 8: Secure with Thread Locker (Optional)
To prevent screws from loosening due to recoil, apply a small amount of thread locker (e.g., Loctite) to the threads before securing the screws. This will help maintain a stable and secure fit.
